Is it because, like Navajos, we’re afraid

to leave bits of ourselves among strangers

who may suck in our spirits through them? No,

it’s not fear of the stranger who’ll stay dry

under my umbrella, nor of the rain

I’ll get caught in without it, that troubles me.

It’s the crumbling, maybe, the termite dust

trailing me from movie to coffee shop,

whispering everywhere that gravity’s gone slack,

that pieces are coming loose like shingles.

Time to strike a balance, add up the tally:

I’ve done my share of finding, as well as losing.
